Down Syndrome
Definition:
People with Down Syndrome have an extra, critical portion of chromosome 21 present in all or some of their cells. This additional genetic material alters the course of development and causes the characteristics associated with Down syndrome.
Three chromosomal patterns:
1.Trisomy 21: every cell contains an extra chromosome 21
- 95% of individuals with Down syndrome
2.Translocation: extra piece of chromosome 21 is attached to another chromosome
- 3-4% of individuals with Down syndrome
3.Mosaicism: extra chromosome 21 in some cells, other cells have only two
- 1% of individuals with Down syndrome
Code 43
