Today we had a flipped classroom, this made for a fun and exciting class! Giving the instruction as homework provides more time for active and collaborative learning. Individualized learning can be enhanced with a flipped classroom by group work and project-based learning. This also gives students a chance to gain responsibility and ownership of their own learning, as they must review the materials before class time. However, depending on the age and ability, some students may not engage in the materials on their own which may lead to confusion, misunderstanding of information, or the need for more time when it comes to working in class. How would I incorporate a flipped classroom into an elementary classroom? I do not think a flipped classroom is appropriate until at least the junior high level. The Center for Teaching and Learning provides a terrific explanation of a flipped classroom.
Mobile learning in education is important, especially in this century. Integrating technology with Ipads is a powerful tool to enhance learning and develop student knowledge. In a classroom, Ipads can be used for math, literacy, and science through games and videos. Some educational apps for Ipads include, “Grade 1 Math”, “Hungry Fish”, “Addition”, “Rocket Speller”, “Phonics Vowels”, “Sight Words”, and “Frog Jump”. I have used most of these apps in my teaching experiences and found them very effective in the learning process. The students become more focused and motivated to learn. Using cellphones in older grades is also an effective tool to keep the students engaged. Polleverywhere can be used as a form of assessment and allows students to gain a deeper understanding of the materials.
