Today in class we discussed the ways a teacher could use video conferencing in their classroom. I believe video conferencing is an excellent tool to engage students and expand their knowledge. Video conferencing allows students to connect with a variety of people and different experiences around the world. Not only will this tool enhance students’ learning through expertise but students will also become digital citizenships. In class we conferenced a content provider here in Alberta, the Royal Tyrrell Museum. This was such an amazing educational experience, I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in this video conference. The Royal Tyrell Museum went through some exemplar programs they would use in an elementary classroom. This was so neat to watch because I have never seen video conferencing done at a lower elementary level. I got to think as a teacher and brainstorm ways I could use video conferencing in my classroom. The Center of Learning and Collaboration is a great website to search for content provider programs around the world. I would be concerned to use video conferencing in a lower elementary only because of their attention span and struggle to keep engaged. However, with a content provider program, much like the Royal Tyrell Museum, it would be easy because you are introducing the students to something new with different people. Some sites that you could use when video conferencing include Zoom and Skype.
Another way to integrate new media into your class without video conferencing is normal videos. For example, TED Talks and Youtube. In my classroom I will use a lot of videos because they engage the students and strengthens the students’ understanding of the materials. Have Fun Teaching is a great Youtube Channel for videos on sightwords, letters, colors, etc.
