This mind map represents my summary of knowledge and major concerns relating Digital Citizenship and Web Awareness.
Integrating technology to the classroom there are concerns and issues teachers and students will come into contact with. Firstly, how can we represent ethical citizens on the web? Netiquette, internet etiquette, demonstrates the importance of manners. While on the internet, individuals should treat others the way they want to be treated, have clear communication, ask permission before taking something from someone and show online manners. Being an ethical digital citizen requires respect. Respect yourself, others and property. Secondly, how can we ensure privacy on the web? As teachers we must guarantee students how to take ownership when connect with the web by teaching proper citing techniques (Purdue Owl), discuss identity theft and password protect, and always check privacy settings. Discussion about protection of rights, devices and hardware should also take place. Students should have an understanding of the consequences that occur when sharing information. For example; who are you sharing with, what are you sharing, and what are you implying. Finally, how do we safely use the internet? Before engaging in the web, students should be taught rules and safety regulations. They should understand what cyber bullying is and how it can be avoided. Students need to know there is inappropriate material on the web and teachers can help prevent this content by blocking pop ups, teaching effective search techniques and explain false/misrepresentations. To ensure the success of web use and positive experiences students must be taught digital citizenship and web awareness.
